Pelosi lashes out against insurance companies

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday ramped up her criticism of insurance companies, accusing them of unethical behavior and working to kill a plan to create a new government-run health plan.

"It's almost immoral what they are doing," Pelosi said to reporters, referring to insurance companies. "Of course they've been immoral all along in how they have treated the people that they insure," she said, adding, "They are the villains. They have been part of the problem in a major way. They are doing everything in their power to stop a public option from happening."

So she and other politicians are always saying how these evil corporations are making billions of dollars at the expense of the insured's health. However, if these insurers were cutting corners and denying necessary procedures, etc, how would they even stay in business? Wouldn't we rush to the provider that actually treats our claims? But I digress.

Let's look at what kind of obscene money these guys are making:

United Health
Wellpoint
Aetna

Good Lord! These companies are making BILLIONS! And at a profit margin of...wait for it...a WHOPPING 4%!

False argument here. Insurance is like cable service. If you don't like it, you don't have much of a choice in terms of option. If you have a disease and your insurance denies treatment, you can not go to another provider that would cover that condition. What's the point of tax credit for healthcare when no one will cover you? I have not heard anyone who's proposed tax credit answer that question.

What the point of society covering people that are uncoverable if that will result in no one getting covered due to insolvency in the public system?

You are assuming that if there is some single payer equivalent system, that the uncoverable patient will get covered by the public system, when all signs lead to rationing. You detriment society as a whole to hopefully win the government health lottery.

By your argument, what's the point of public school system or voucher system? I don't have kids, I don't want to pay for anyone's education? Stealing my money to fund another child's learning is stealing nonetheless. What about veteran's service? Ain't my fault they lost a limb or have pyschological issues? Why should my tax dollar pay for their problems? If fact, why should we pay any taxes period? I only want to pay for things I need, like my own medical insurance.

Those things don't make the country insolvent. But I agree we should spend less on those items.
